This “urban culture factory” is located at the intersection of Atlanta’s beltline and Ponce De Leon Avenue and features a mixture of program: an artists’ market, rock climbing, archery, a hydroponic garden, a rooftop garden, and a maker’s space for 3D printed pottery and robotic murals. Beginning with precedent studies of Louis Kahn’s Philips Exeter Library, the notion of “layering” is explored and then represented through the layering of linework in an assemblage drawing. The concept of layering is then taken further into a more specified direction of “space frames,” which is studied through a series of physical models based off of various modular connections, designed specifically to give off the impression of “layering” spaces through repetition of overlapping pattern. One of these physical models is chosen as the main premise for structure of the building and these modular structural space frames are arranged so that they accommodate to the various types of program.
